Richard Hambleton 'The Godfather of street art'

New York  legend Richard Hambleton is referred to as the Godfather of Street art. His 'shadowmen' sprung up all over the streets of New York throughout the 1980's and are citied as inspiration by contemporary street artists such as Blek le Rat and Banksy. These "shadow paintings" were splashed and brushed with black paint on hundreds of buildings and other structures across New York and later in Paris, London, Rome and even on the Berlin wall.

Hambleton studied and worked with pop art legend Keith Haring and together they gained notoriety amongst the New York art scene during the booming 1980's art market.

These pictures are from his recent London show in collaboration with Giorgio Armani. Richard Hambleton New York 'The godfather of street art' at The Dairy London, November 2010.
